The call to action for Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 is “Climate, Food & Solidarity” and
reflects some of the most urgent challenges facing people worldwide. This year we will focus
on dismantling poverty and inequality by taking action against climate change and creating resilient
food environments.
At SHELTERSUIT SOUTH AFRICA FOUNDATION we MANUFACTURE A PRODUCT CALLED THE SHELTERBAG to keep homeless persons warm and dry . The shelterbag is a wind and waterproof portable sleeping bag which includes mattress , a hoody including its own head pillow ,a pocket to put personal belongings and a feet ventilation opening and weighs just under 3 kg
The bag was designed way back in 2014 by a Dutch fashion designer called Bas Timmer (founder of Sheltersuit Foundation Netherlands), who was so shocked by a friends’ homeless father dying from hypothermia on the streets of the Netherlands, that he gave up his career and decided to dedicate his life to giving people experiencing homelessness all over the world, warmth and shelter at night .The shelterbag is an immediately usable product. It is a tool for social workers to develop a relationship with people who are seeking psycho-social support.
Sheltersuit South Africa was set up in 2020 as an independent branch from Sheltersuit Foundation in the Netherlands, after the initial pilot project still under the Rotary flag in 2019.
Previously unemployed ladies were invited onto our skills and development programme .Our team is paid a stipend, because it is ethical, and they are able to support their families. The skills that they learn give them independence and the opportunity for job creation.
Our objective is to produce 2 000 shelterbags to assist families affected by flooding in Western Cape and other parts of the country as we face severe and unprecedented storms. The distribution will assist municipalities in areas such as Paarl, Stellenbosch, Cederberg, Citrusdal and parts of the Klein Karoo to house displaced families in alternative community accommodation.
